Case report. Lymphatic vessel-type sporotrichosis: immunohistochemical evaluation and cytokine expression pattern

Background:

• A 57-year-old carpenter presented with a gradually spreading ulcer on his left forearm.
• The ulcer appeared in May 1992 and measured 39 mm x 18 mm.

Observation:

• Histopathology revealed epidermal ulceration, dermal infiltration, central abscess, and granulomatous reactions.
• PAS-positive spores were identified within infiltrating cells and giant cells.

Findings:

• The skin lesion resolved rapidly with oral terbinafine treatment (125 mg/day).
• Immunohistochemical analysis examined cytokine expression before, during, and after treatment.

Implications:

• Terbinafine is effective for treating fungal skin infections.
• Cytokine expression may play a role in the host's response to fungal infections.
